Education & Studies in Augsburg

As a student you must register at the Bürgerbüro Augsburg within 14 days of moving in. This is also a requirement for BAföG and many discounts.

BAföG is state study funding. The responsible office is at the Studierendenwerk Augsburg. Apply as early as possible – it is not paid retroactively!

As a student you are insured free of charge in your parents' family insurance up to age 25. After that or if you earn money: student health insurance (approx. €130/month up to 14th semester).

Child benefit (currently €250/month) continues up to age 25 even during studies – but ONLY if parents actively renew it at Familienkasse Bayern Sud!

Depending on the type of service, different social insurance and registration regulations apply. These periods may also be relevant for pension or waiting periods.

The Studierendenwerk Augsburg offers besides BAföG also cafeterias, student residences and counselling. The semester ticket is included in the semester fee.

For Work & Travel, you need to complete important organizational steps, such as visa, health insurance, international health insurance and possibly deregistration in Germany. Different rules apply depending on the destination country.

For training or studies definitely have your own account. Many banks offer free student accounts. A credit card is essential for online shopping, travel and international payments.

Two insurances every student and trainee needs: liability insurance pays if you accidentally damage someone. Legal protection insurance helps with disputes – e.g. with landlord or employer.
