Having a Baby in Dresden

The birth must be reported to the Dresden registry office. For hospital births, the facility handles the registration – you submit your documents there.

Children are curious – and that leads to accidents. Statutory accident insurance only applies at nursery and school, not at home or during leisure time. Private accident insurance and parents' risk life insurance provide all-round family protection.

Accidents happen faster than you think – and children are active. Child accident insurance pays for permanent injuries, liability insurance protects when your child accidentally damages something.

If you are not married, the father must officially acknowledge paternity. This can be done before the birth and saves stress later!

Parental allowance is paid by the Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB). You can apply online at dresden.de/elterngeld.

You receive child benefit monthly from the family benefits office – currently €250 per child. You can submit the application completely online.

Child benefit of over €250 per month can go straight into savings – in 18 years your child will have a solid financial start. A children's account or ETF savings plan costs nothing and runs automatically.

Register your child with your health insurance. In public insurance, they are automatically covered under family insurance free of charge.

Register your child for daycare as early as possible. In Dresden use the Elternportal for registration!
