If you are planning a binational marriage – one of you does not have a German passport – you need a certificate of no impediment from the foreign partner's home country. If the home country does not issue such certificates, the OLG Düsseldorf must grant an exemption – this can take several months! Get advice from the Duisburg registry office early.

Register your marriage at the responsible Duisburg registry office – the one at the home address of one of the partners. Registration is possible from 6 months before the desired date.
